Not many recruiters can say they’ve pushed Top Echelon Network co-founder Mike Kappel into a swimming pool. Twice.

Not many recruiters can say that they’ve billed $1 million through Top Echelon Network and $1 million through Top Echelon Contracting. (Now known as Foxhire.)

And not many recruiters can say that they’ve attended the majority of Top Echelon conferences and conventions . . . ever.

Al Katz of First Search, Inc.

Al Katz

But Al Katz of First Search can lay claim to all three, and he, perhaps more than anyone, can appreciate the gravity of Top Echelon Network’s 35th birthday. After all, Al was almost there from the very beginning. (Although he joined the Network a bit too late to be considered a Charter Member.)

Al also appreciates the fact that what was the key to Network success in 1990 is the same thing that’s the key in 2023: relationships.

“The key is forming relationships and trusting each other,” said Al, who started recruiting in 1976 and says he has no intention of retiring in the near future. “When I joined the Network, I realized that you had to talk to people. You weren’t going to know about the job until you asked them what they were looking for. People don’t realize that we dealt with paper in the beginning. That’s all we had.”

There was no Internet when Al joined the Network. There was no social media. There were no smartphones. There were fax machines, if you were lucky. In the early days, Top Echelon (then known as Nationwide Interchange Service) racked up an annual million dollar bill with the United States Postal Service because it mailed resumes to recruiters all over the country. Because . . . how else were Network members going to see them?

“Basically, we used to run ads in newspapers and search through our own database [to find candidates],” said Al.

Top Echelon’s ATS did not exist, either. By the time that TE did produce a software for Network recruiters, it was a desktop version. You know . . . the kind that you download from a disk, floppy or otherwise.

“At the time, headhunters didn’t even know how to use computers,” said Al. “Top Echelon had to fly two people (Jim Kohan and Paul Bailey) to a conference to show us how to use it. There was no technology at the time. This is all stuff we had to learn as we went.”

According to Al, the annual conferences and conventions that Top Echelon held in the early days was critical to its success—and the success of its recruiters.

“Headhunters are stubborn and set in their ways,” he said. “We’re rebellious and we don’t like listening. It’s difficult to convince us to do things and we can be difficult to work with, which is why going to the events was so important. You had to meet people, hang out with them, and really get to know them. I called that the ‘Kappel Glue,’ because that’s the glue that kept us together. That’s how you find out who you’re going to work with.”

Al’s daughter, Sarah, also works at First Search and is also a Preferred Member recruiter in Top Echelon Network. During Top Echelon Connect 2022 in Las Vegas, Al, Sarah, and First Search Chief Career Accelerator Bill Griffis were spending time with another Network member, Michael Stuck of Gables Search Group.

“We went out to dinner and then went to a comedy club,” said Al. “Michael told Sarah that he didn’t need her for a search at the moment, but when he did, he would call her. And that’s what happened. He called her, they collaborated on a search, and made a split. That wouldn’t have happened if we hadn’t attended that event and spent time together.”

The connections that recruiters make in Top Echelon Network aren’t just relationships; they’re friendships, and some of them last the rest of their lives.

Cathy George [of C.G. & Company] called me on my birthday,” said Al. “She sang happy birthday to me while I was driving in my car with my wife. We still have a friendship after all these years because of meeting at Top Echelon events.”

Al is such a big believer in communication and building relationships that he’s made that the centerpiece of First Search’s branding campaign. That campaign has included a new website design that further differentiates Al’s firm.

“Our brand is all about relationships and communication,” said Al, who is also a certified branding coach, along with Bill Griffis. “We talk to people and we ask questions that need to be asked. These days, with people wanting to text and be on their phone all the time, that’s a difference maker and that’s a differentiator.”

In terms of technology, 35 years ago might as well be 350 years ago. The good news, though, is that Top Echelon Network didn’t need paper resumes to be successful. It didn’t need fax machines or even software.

And now, 35 years later, it doesn’t need the Internet or social media. It doesn’t need smartphones or job posting.

What Top Echelon Network needs to be successful now is the same thing that it needed to be successful when it started on March 8, 1988: skilled, knowledgeable, talented members like Al Katz who are motivated to make connections with other recruiters and build solid relationships and quite possibly some friendships.

Even if they don’t have Mike Kappel to push around anymore.

As you probably already know since we’ve been mentioning it in just about every post in this issue of The Pinnacle Newsletter Blog, today is the 35th birthday of Top Echelon. Back when we started on March 8, 1988, we were not known as Top Echelon, though. We were known as Nationwide Interchange Service or NIS.

We know. It’s a long story.

Steve Brody of Executive Resource Systems

Steve Brody

Part of that long story is Top Echelon Network Preferred Member Steve Brody of Executive Resource Systems. That’s because was a Charter Member of the Network. That means his agency was one of the 20 agencies that were new Preferred Member firms on that March day those many years ago.

A lot has happened since then including all of the other 19 agencies that were Charter Members either leaving the Network, closing their doors, or a combination thereof. Steve Brody, on the other hand, is literally the last man standing.

During his time in Top Echelon, Steve has made 140 Network placements totaling nearly $960K. And he hasn’t slowed down, either, as he’s made three split placements already this year and seven splits in 2022.

We reached out to Steve and asked him to say a few words about his tenure in the Network and his many experiences over the years, and he was good enough to do so. (By the way, the photo above is of Steve and Top Echelon founder Mike Kappel several years ago when Steve visited the TE headquarters in Canton, Ohio.)

Here’s what Steve had to say:

“I consider it an honor and a privilege to be a Charter Member of Top Echelon. The Network has been a major part of my life over the last 35 years, socially, educationally, and financially. I consider many of the staff and member recruiters as friends and valued colleagues. I’ve learned many viable skills from the online and in-person recruiter training sessions, and a high percentage of my future retirement savings would not be there if not for the 150+ split placements the Network has enabled me to participate in.

“I recall when the Network was called the Nationwide Interchange Service, which was free to join. They mailed me hundreds of hard copy worthless paper resumes every month. They are no longer free, and now I have to sift through hundreds of worthless resumes every day. However, it is well worth it for all of the ‘diamonds in the rough’ bullseye candidates and resulting split placements.

“Founder Mike Kappel, President Mark Demaree, ‘Head Geek’ Todd Bosler, Matt Deutsch, River Kale, Tyler Harrell, and many other TE staff have been wonderful to work with over the years. However, I want to give a special shout-out to Drea Codispoti, who has come through so many times for me. Whether proactively putting me in touch with other recruiters, mediating the occasional misunderstanding, or organizing and running various programs and conferences, he has been an invaluable resource to both myself and Top Echelon. His level of patience and understanding, drive, intelligence, creativity, and passion for the recruiting industry crowns him as the ‘top echelon of Top Echelon’!

“I strongly encourage other members to take advantage of the monthly core group online meetings and in-person conferences. I’ve made numerous placements that would not have happened without these direct recruiter interactions, and I’m looking forward to meeting old friends and hopeful new trading partners at next week’s conference in New Orleans!”

Everybody at Top Echelon would like to congratulate Steve on his commitment to the Network during these past three-and-half decades and also for his success and longevity in the profession.

And since Steve plugged the spring convention, we might as well, too. We hope that you’ll be joining Steve, the rest of the Top Echelon crew, and close to 90 other Network recruiters in New Orleans for Top Echelon Connect 2023 this week!

There’s no better time like the 35th birthday of Top Echelon to check out who currently leads the Network in split placements and fees!

For the purposes of this blog post and the standings that I am about to share, we’re talking about active leaders. In other words, those recruiters who are currently part of a Preferred Member firm in Top Echelon Network.

During the past 35 years, many recruiting agencies have come and gone. And quite a few of them racked up impressive numbers, some of which were even larger than the numbers you see below. Alas, we will not be mentioning them today, since this is a list of active members. (However, one day we shall publish a comprehensive list.)

That’s the first bit of good news I have to share. The second bit of good news is that we have a dedicated URL that you can use to check out the active Network leaders at any time. Click HERE to visit that URL.

Below is a list of the active leaders in Top Echelon Network in terms of split placements. (Each recruiter’s career cash-in is also listed. However, the list is based upon splits and not cash-in. You can view the cash-in leaders on the dedicated URL by changing the search parameters.)

#1—Trey Cameron of Cameron Craig Group.: 1,249 placements and $9,934,048

#2—Steve Kohn of Affinity Executive Search: 496 placements and $4,529,111

#3—Michael Stuck of Gables Search Group: 436 placements and $3,181,231

#4Maria Hemminger of MJ Recruiters: 230 placements and $1,785,828

#5—Jim Strickland of BioSource Recruiters: 216 placements and $1,489,414

#6—Al Katz of First Search: 185 placements and $1,000,632

#7—Pat McCombs, CPC of KB Search Team, LLC: 148 placements and $1,279,539

#8—David M. Sgro, CPC of True North Consultants, Inc.: 138 placements and $1,199,282

#9—Lawrence T. Ploscowe of EXEK Recruiters, Ltd.: 134 placements and $1,152,438

#10—Keith Cornelison of Personnel Resources: 128 placements and $724,411

You can see that many recruiters have reached impressive milestones in Top Echelon Network, and others are close to hitting milestones of their own.

Considering that the monthly membership fee for the Network is just $135 per month, these recruiters and their agencies have received a considerable return on the investment they’ve made in Network membership. (In some cases, recruiters have received an astronomical return.)

But that’s why we’re here. That’s why we started 35 years ago, and that will be part of our mission for the next 35 years—to help recruiters make more placements. (And then give them a link to view said placements to see who’s winning . . . because recruiters are nothing if not competitive.)

What’s the best way to celebrate your birthday? With cake? Maybe a few presents? A get-together with some friends, both old and new?

Yes, yes, and yes.

But at Top Echelon, if there’s anything that we’ve learned since our inception 35 years ago, it’s that the best way to celebrate a birthday is with split placements!

Actually, allow me to add qualifier to that statement. Ahem . . . the best way to celebrate a birthday is with split placements that have BIG fees attached to them!

And as you can see below, we have such fees in this issue of The Pinnacle Newsletter Blog, which also happens to be the 35th Birthday Edition of the newsletter. Three of the fees are $30K or more and five of them are $25K or more.

Sure, you have to split the fee, but it’s like splitting a big birthday cake down the middle and eating half of it. Including the icing. With no ice cream. It can be filling.

Anyway, congratulations to all of the recruiters below for their recent split placements and for helping us to celebrate 35 years of helping recruiters just like you!

As a friendly neighborhood reminder, here is the information that we publish with our weekly placements:

  • Names of the split recruiting partners involved (with their profile photos, when available)
  • Job title
  • Overall placement fee (before TE’s 6% brokerage fee, of course)
  • Fee percentage

Please note that the placements listed below reflect deals finalized in Top Echelon Network for the period from February 27 through March 5, 2023.

Remember, if you don’t want information related to your Network placements published in The Pinnacle, please send an email to marketing@topechelon.com to that effect.

Congratulations to everybody below for the split placements they made in Top Echelon Network!
